How To Make The Most Out Of Small Living Spaces

April 6, 2021     Advice

You might think that your current living space is too small to do anything with. Whether it’s a small box bathroom or an area of your small living room that you just don’t know what to do with to maximise the space, there are plenty of nifty tricks that you can consider to create the illusion of more space. Further to this, you might be wondering how to best utilise under stair storage or which furniture to purchase for a small bedroom that won’t look too bulky in one of the most relaxing spaces of the home.

Whatever your small living space situation, we have some simple suggestions that could just transform your unusable space into something you admire every day. Read on to find out more, as well as how our general Exeter building services can help you to create a space that you will love.

Consider Position Of Living First & Foremost

Establish the perfect β€˜position of living’ for you – by the position of living, we mean how you arrange your furniture, if you face a window when sitting in your living room etc – creating a space that works for you and your requirements. Would you rather have a small coffee table in the lightest part of the kitchen, so you can wake up and sit in a space that rejuvenates you before the working day? How about having your living room TV secured to the wall, rather than taking up a corner of the room that could be utilised for storage?

We recommend writing a list of what you require from each of your smaller rooms in your home and the feeling you want to achieve when you walk into or sit in each room.

Colour Schemes & Creating Light

bright white bedroom with large windows

We all know that dark colours in a home are more than likely to create the illusion of a smaller space. So on the flip side, if you have a small room and want to create the illusion of a larger space, you’ll want to go for bright, neutral colours such as plain white, magnolia to bring warmth, or a light grey, if you want to use a two-tone effect such as in a downstairs bathroom.

Our Exeter painters and decorators can advise and help you choose the best colour and type of paint to use before starting the project. For example, we would recommend choosing a gloss paint for interior wooden doors, which can catch and reflect either natural or fake light. What’s more, painting the walls and ceilings the same colour will make a room look taller, with no definitive ending to the wall and start of the ceiling.

Off the back of this, consider furniture, such as coffee tables and side tables, that are made of glass or perspex, so you can see through them. Unlike wooden, heavy and bulky coffee tables, see-through furniture, to the eye, takes up less space.

Organising Objects & Framed Pictures

It might seem like a very small factor when arranging furniture and accessories in a small living area and it totally depends on your need for creating space, but the way you organise ornaments, picture frames and objects can really define different areas in a small room. Rather than having lots of little things all over the room, try and organise them in a β€˜cluster’. Having lots of little things around the circumference of the room not only detracts from the purpose of a relaxing space, but also prevents giving focus to a particular spot in the room for the objects.

Creating visual interest in a particular spot of the room will initiate conversation amongst your friends and family, as well as embracing minimal use of a space. The same goes for picture frames on the wall – if you have multiple frames in one space, arrange them nearer to the ceiling so the eye draws up to the ceiling, giving the effect of a higher ceiling. On the other hand, if you have just one or two pictures, hang them lower down the wall so the space between the wall and ceiling appears greater.

Last Case Scenario, Property Conversion

If you have the budget, time and planning permission to do so, you could always consider an Exeter property conversion to open up living areas, by removing walls or alcoves. Cowley’s builders have achieved many space creating opportunities for domestic properties in Exeter, with fantastic results for individuals and families. Not only does it increase physical space, but also the opportunity for more storage solutions that may not have been available beforehand.
